Swim Lesson Levels of Instruction

Minnows (Level One):
Introduction to Swimming and Water Safety Skills

Participants will learn to:

• Enter and exit water safely

• Submerge eyes, ears, nose, and mouth

• Submerge mouth and blow bubbles

• Safely use the slide and swim to side with support

• Enter water by jumping from side with support

• Roll over from front to back and back to front with support

• Explore floating on front and back with support

• Explore swimming on front and back using arm and leg actions with support

King Fish (Level Three):
Stroke Development

Participants will learn to:

• Jump into deep water from the side

• Submerge and retrieve an object in the well of the pool

• Tread with the head fully submerged using hand and leg movements

• Rotary breathing in horizontal position

• Perform front and back glide using two different kicks

• Float on front and back in deep water

• Change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back

• Perform front and back crawl

• Breast Stoke – kick and body motion

• Butterfly—kick and body motion

Goldfish (Level Two):
Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Participants will learn to:

• Enter deep water by stepping or jumping from the side

• Exit water safely using ladder or side

• Submerge entire head

• Blow bubbles

• Pick up a submerged object in shallow water

• Float on front and back

• Change direction of travel paddling on front or back

• Roll over from front to back, back to front

• Tread water using arm and leg motions (chest-deep water)

• Swim on front and back using combined arm and leg actions

Porpoise (Level Four):
Stroke and Turn, Mastering the Skills

Participants will learn to:

• Dive head first into deep water

• Freestyle: proper technique and flip turn

• Back Stroke: proper technique and flip turn

• Breast Stoke: proper technique and turn

• Butterfly: proper technique and turn

• Rotary breathing in horizontal position
